This old map shows how the islands looked a long time ago. The area covers about 1,700 square kilometers. Most of that is water, with about 530 square kilometers being land. Some parts of this special area are even protected as a Ramsar site.

Nature is always changing in this part of the world. The land is shaped by something called post-glacial rebound. This means the islands actually rise by about three millimeters every year. The water in the archipelago can look a bit brown in some places. This happens because of substances in the water. The water is not as salty as the ocean. In the outer parts, the salt level is only 0.6 to 0.7 percent.

In the winter, the water in the inner parts often turns to ice.

People have lived among these islands for a very long time. During the Viking Age, the islands began to look like they do today. From the mid-1400s until the mid-1900s, most people were farmers and fishermen. They worked very hard to catch fish in the spring and autumn. In 1719, only about 2,900 people lived there. Today, the islands are much more crowded. There are around 10,000 permanent homes and 50,000 holiday homes for visitors.

There are many different islands to explore. There are over 24,000 islands, islets, and small rocks. Some famous islands include Värmdö, Grinda, and Utö. You can reach some larger islands by bridge or bus. Other islands need a boat to get there. Some boats follow a set schedule every day.

This photo shows a boat traveling near the islands. One small village, Ytterby, is very famous with scientists. It is the place where four different chemical elements were named.

Many people enjoy visiting the archipelago for fun. Some people love to go sailing in big races. One famous race is called the Ornö runt. It has happened every year since 1973. In the winter, people go skating on the frozen water. Many famous artists and writers have found inspiration here. Even members of the music group ABBA wrote songs in a cabin in the islands. A special law called Allemansrätt lets people land their boats on many shores.
