The Øresund is a busy stretch of water between two countries.

It forms the border between Denmark and Sweden. This strait separates the island of Zealand from the region of Scania. It is a very important path for ships on our planet. The Øresund is one of four waterways that connect the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Because of this, it is one of the busiest waterways in the world.

The water in the strait is quite unusual. It sits between the salty ocean and the less salty Baltic Sea. This means the salt levels in the water are always shifting. Near the surface, the water is often less salty. However, the water near the seafloor is very salty and stable. This mix of water types creates a special home for many living things. About 600 species of animals are known to live in some part of the Øresund.

Many interesting sea creatures live in these waters. You might find lobsters or small crabs near the bottom. There are also many types of flatfish living there. One famous animal is the lion's mane jellyfish. This jellyfish can sometimes drift into the southwest Baltic Sea. The salt levels at the bottom help these animals breed. If enough salty ocean water flows in during storms, it helps fish like cod stay healthy.

History shows that people have always cared about this water. Long ago, Denmark controlled the area with strong fortresses. One was Kronborg castle in Elsinore, and another was Kärnan in Helsingborg.

For hundreds of years, the Danish kings collected money from ships passing through. This was called the Sound Dues. It was a very important way for the kings to earn money. In 1857, a new agreement made the strait an international waterway for everyone.

Today, people stay connected by crossing the water easily. The Øresund Bridge was opened on July 1, 2000.

It connects the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, to the city of Malmö in Sweden. This bridge links a huge area where nearly 4 million people live. Some people still prefer to use the ferry between Helsingør and Helsingborg. That ferry route is one of the busiest in the world. It has more than 70 departures from each harbor every single day.
