Steven Bradbury is a famous short-track speed skater from Australia. Short-track skating is a very fast race on ice. He competed in four different Winter Olympics throughout his career. Bradbury is best known for his amazing gold medal win. He won the 1,000 m event at the 2002 Winter Olympics. This victory made him a hero to many people. He was the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to win a Winter Olympic gold medal.

His gold medal win happened in a very unusual way. During the final race, Bradbury was actually in last place. He was far behind the other skaters. However, the leaders were all fighting for the top spot. On the final corner, all four of the other skaters crashed. This left the path clear for Bradbury to skate past them. He was about 15 m behind them with only 50 m left to go. He crossed the finish line to win the gold medal.

Bradbury had to overcome many hard times to reach the top. In 1994, he won a bronze medal in the relay. This was the first Winter Olympic medal for Australia. He also faced scary injuries during his career. In Montreal, a skater's blade cut his thigh very deeply. He lost four litres of blood and needed 111 stitches. Later, in 2000, he broke his neck during a training accident. He had to have pins and plates put into his body.

Even after his neck injury, Bradbury stayed determined. Doctors told him he might never skate again. He wanted to find redemption for his past crashes. He worked very hard to return to the ice. At the 2002 Olympics, he was one of the oldest skaters. He used a smart plan to stay safe during his races. He chose to skate behind the leaders to avoid accidents. This strategy helped him reach the final race successfully.

His win changed how people talk in Australia. People use the phrase "doing a Bradbury" to describe an unexpected success. This means winning even when the odds are against you. He became a symbol of an underdog who never gives up. Australia Post even released a special stamp to honor him. His story shows that perseverance can lead to amazing things. It reminds us that staying in the race matters most.
