Swimming started for Ian almost by chance. His older sister, Christina, began swimming to help a broken wrist. At age five, Ian followed her into the pool. As a young child, he had an allergy to chlorine. This meant he had to swim with his head out of the water. Even with this hard task, he won his first race at age seven. He eventually overcame the allergy and grew into a powerful swimmer.
