Steven Bradbury

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Steven Bradbury is a famous ice skater from Australia. He was a short-track speed skater. This is a fast race on ice. He competed in four Winter Olympics.

In 2002, Steven won a gold medal. This was a huge surprise! He was in last place during the final race. Then, the other skaters crashed on a corner. This let Steven skate past them to win. He was the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to win a Winter Olympic gold medal.

His path to winning was not easy. He had many scary accidents. Once, a skate cut his leg very badly. He needed 111 stitches. Later, he broke his neck in a training fall. Doctors said he might not skate again. But Steven did not give up. He worked hard to return to the ice.

People in Australia see him as a hero. They call his win an underdog success. This means winning when no one expects you to. In Australia, people even use his name as a phrase. They say "doing a Bradbury" when someone has an unexpected win.
