Steve Biko was a leader in South Africa.

He fought against a system called apartheid. Under apartheid, laws were unfair to Black people. They were kept away from white people.

Biko grew up in a place called Ginsberg. His family was Xhosa. As a student, he wanted to study medicine. He joined a group for students. But he felt the group did not listen to Black students.

In 1968, Biko helped start a new group. It was called the South African Students' Organisation. He was its first president.

He taught a way of thinking called Black Consciousness. He wanted Black people to feel proud. He used the words "black is beautiful." He wanted them to feel strong in their own minds.

The government did not like his ideas. They tried to stop him. They put him under a banning order. This meant he had many rules to follow. In 1977, the police arrested him. They beat him, and he died. Many people went to his funeral.
