Steve Biko was a famous leader in South Africa.

He fought against a system called apartheid. This system used unfair laws to keep people apart based on their race. Biko wanted a country where everyone had the right to vote. He also wanted a fairer economy for all people. His ideas helped many people find strength during a hard time.

Biko's ideas focused on something called Black Consciousness. This was a way of thinking that helped people feel proud. He believed that Black people needed to feel strong in their own minds. He used the famous phrase "black is beautiful" to spread this message. This helped people reject ideas that made them feel less important. By feeling proud, they could better fight for their freedom.

He was born in 1946 in the Eastern Cape. His family was Xhosa and they lived in a township. His father worked as a police officer and a clerk. His mother worked as a cook at a hospital. These early years helped him see how hard life could be. He was a very smart student who loved math and English.

In 1966, Biko started studying medicine at the University of Natal. He joined a large group of students called NUSAS. However, he felt this group was mostly run by white people. He wanted Black students to lead their own groups. In 1968, he helped start the South African Students' Organisation, or SASO. He served as the very first president of this new group.

Because of his work, the government saw Biko as a threat. They put him under a banning order in 1973. This meant he had many strict rules to follow. Even then, he helped run health centers and schools for children. In August 1977, the police arrested him. Sadly, he was beaten by officers and died soon after. Over 20,000 people attended his funeral to honor him.
