She is widely recognized for her Mandopop music, which includes many emotional ballads. Throughout her career, Sun has built a reputation for her "girl next door" image. This persona helped her connect with a massive audience across Asia. She has sold more than 30 million albums in total. This makes her one of the best-selling recording artists from Singapore and the Chinese-speaking world.

Sun's path to stardom began during her time as a university student. She attended Nanyang Technological University and earned a bachelor's degree in Marketing in 2000. While studying, she wrote her very first song, which was titled "Someone." Her musical potential was noticed by a mentor named Paul Lee. Lee introduced her to Samuel Chou, the chairman of Warner Music Taiwan. This connection led to the release of her debut album, Yan Zi, in 2000.

Her early career was marked by rapid commercial success and professional recognition. Her first album, Yan Zi, sold over 330,000 copies in Taiwan and 200,000 copies in China. For this achievement, she won the Golden Melody Award for Best New Artist. Her following albums, My Desired Happiness and Kite, also sold over 300,000 copies each in Taiwan. These three records are among the best-selling albums of the 21st century in Taiwan. In 2004, her album titled Stefanie sold more than 2.2 million copies across Asia. This specific album also earned her a Golden Melody Award for Best Mandarin Female Singer.

Sun's impact on the music industry is reflected in her massive sales figures. By the year 2007, five of her studio albums had each sold over 1 million copies in mainland China. Her compilation album, The Moment, released in 2003, sold over 1.5 million copies throughout Asia. She also produced the hit single "Encounter" on that record. In 2005, her album A Perfect Day sold over 1 million copies in Asia in less than one month. This album was the tenth best-selling album of 2005 and the fourth best-selling by a female artist.

Her live performances are known for being large-scale and highly creative productions. In 2009, she held "The Answer is World Tour," which cost more than NT$100 million to produce. This tour featured advanced stage designs like diamond-shaped cut stages and floating pianos. The show also utilized jellyfish lights and special light and shadow sculptures. Later, her Kepler World Tour between 2014 and 2015 attracted more than 760,000 people.

Even her likeness is celebrated, as she has a wax figure at Madame Tussauds Singapore. That figure cost SG$300,000 and took four months to create.

Beyond her music, Sun has received many honors and cultural recognitions. In 2006, the National Parks Board of Singapore named an orchid after her, the Dendrobium Stefanie Sun. She has won twenty Singapore Hit Awards and five MTV Asia Awards. She was also named one of the Ten Most Influential Music Figures of the Decade. This honor was given at the Top Chinese Music Awards 10th Anniversary Ceremony. She was recognized alongside other major artists like Jay Chou and Faye Wong.

Sun's career also includes meaningful connections to Singaporean national identity. In 2002 and 2003, she sang the English and Mandarin versions of the Singapore National Day Parade theme songs. These songs were titled "We Will Get There" and "One United People." She has also performed songs that held deep meaning for national leaders. For example, she sang "Que Sera Sera," which was a favorite of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew. Performing this song at the 2011 Business China Awards was a moment she described as a proud one.
