The Stamp Act of 1765 was a major law passed by the British Parliament.

This law was different because it was a direct tax on the American colonies. It required colonists to buy special paper from London to use for many things. This paper had an official embossed stamp on it to show the tax was paid. People needed this stamped paper for legal documents, magazines, and newspapers. It was even required for items like playing cards.

Because the tax had to be paid in British currency, it was a hard job for many colonists to follow.

Britain created this tax for a specific reason. The country had just finished the French and Indian War. This war was very expensive and caused the British national debt to grow a lot. In 1755, the debt was about £72,289,673, but by 1764, it reached almost £129,586,789. To help pay for the war and the soldiers staying in America, the government needed more money. They kept 10,000 British troops in the colonies, which cost about £225,000 every year.

Prime Minister George Grenville decided that taxing the colonies was the way to pay for these soldiers.

The colonists did not think this was fair. They felt the tax violated their rights as Englishmen. They believed they should only be taxed if they gave their consent. Since they had no representatives in the British Parliament, they could not give that consent. This led to the famous slogan, "No taxation without representation."

Many people argued that the colonists were being treated differently than people living in Great Britain. A lawyer named Daniel Dulany wrote that the connection to English representatives was too weak to be relied on.

Protests began to spread quickly across the colonies.

Groups like the Sons of Liberty led demonstrations and protests. Some people even used effigies, which are models of people, to show their anger. Local groups called Committees of Correspondence helped people work together from New England to Maryland. A big meeting called the Stamp Act Congress was held in New York City. This was the first time the colonies worked together to petition the King and Parliament. Eventually, the tax collectors became so intimidated that they resigned, and the tax was never truly collected.

Because of the protests and pressure from British merchants, Parliament repealed the law on March 18, 1766.

However, Parliament also passed the Declaratory Act in 1766. This new law said that Parliament still had the power to make laws for the colonies in any case. This led to more taxes and more arguments later on. These events were very important for the future. The struggles over the Stamp Act helped lead to the American Revolution in 1775.
