In 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act.

This law was a new kind of tax. It required colonists in America to pay for many paper items. This included legal papers, newspapers, and even playing cards.

To show they paid, they had to use paper with an official stamp.

Britain wanted this money to pay for its soldiers. These troops stayed in the American colonies after a big war. Many colonists felt this was unfair. They believed they should not pay taxes without their own consent. They had no leaders in the British Parliament to speak for them. They used the slogan, "No taxation without representation."

Many people began to protest.

Some groups, like the Sons of Liberty, led demonstrations. They even sent petitions to the King. Because of these protests, the tax was not collected well. British merchants also pressured Parliament to stop the law. In 1766, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act. This event helped the colonies work together for the future.
