It was called "Common Sense." At that time, the Thirteen Colonies were ruled by Great Britain. Many people still felt a strong link to Britain. Paine wanted to change that. He wrote his ideas in a clear way. He argued that the colonies should be free.

He said that all men are born equal. He believed that kings should not have all the power.

The book was a huge success. It was sold and read in many places. People even read it out loud in taverns. Some say 120,000 copies were sold in just three months. It became one of the best-selling books in American history.

Paine had big ideas for a new government. He wanted a group of leaders called a Congress. He thought this group should protect freedom for all. He also wanted a special set of rules for the colonies. This would help keep people safe and fair. His words helped many people decide to fight for independence.
