Common Sense is a famous 47-page pamphlet. It was written by Thomas Paine in 1775 and 1776. This small book changed how people thought about freedom. At the time, the Thirteen Colonies were ruled by Great Britain. Many people still wanted to stay connected to Britain. Paine wrote to change their minds. He wanted the colonies to be independent. He used clear words so everyone could understand his ideas.

Paine built his argument in several parts. First, he talked about why people need government. He said society helps people be happy. However, he believed government is a necessary evil to keep order. He also looked at the English system. He argued that kings and nobles held too much power. He thought this was unfair to regular people. In the second part, he spoke about kings. He used ideas from the Bible to show that all people are equal. He believed no one is born to rule over others.

Thomas Paine arrived in the colonies in November 1774. He started working in the Philadelphia newspaper business. He first began writing his ideas as letters. These letters were called "Plain Truth." The ideas grew too long for just letters. So, he decided to make a pamphlet instead. A man named Robert Bell agreed to print it. The pamphlet was first published on January 10, 1776. It became an immediate sensation in the colonies.

This book was a massive success in American history. Some say 120,000 copies sold in three months. Other historians think it sold about 75,000 copies. One estimate says 500,000 copies sold in the first year. This included readers in America, France, and Britain. It went through 25 different editions in one year. Even today, it is a top-selling American title. It was so popular that people read it aloud in taverns.

Paine had big plans for a new American government. He wanted a group called a Continental Congress. This group would help create a Continental Charter. This charter would protect freedom and property for all men. He also wanted people to have freedom of religion. He suggested that colonies should elect representatives to this Congress. This was a very different way to rule. His ideas helped shape the new nation.
