Tensions grew because the British Parliament passed many tax laws. People in the colonies felt these taxes were unfair. In 1773, a group dumped tea into Boston Harbor. This event was called the Boston Tea Party. Soon, fighting began in April 1775 at Lexington and Concord.

The colonies formed a new military called the Continental Army. They chose George Washington to be their leader.

In July 1776, leaders signed the Declaration of Independence. This document said the colonies should be free. The war was hard and the outcome was not sure. However, a big victory at Saratoga helped France join the fight.

In 1781, American and French forces trapped the British at Yorktown.

This led to a British surrender. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed. Great Britain recognized the United States as a new, free nation.
