It lasted from April 1775 to September 1783. This war happened in North America, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic Ocean. The thirteen colonies wanted to be their own nation. They fought against the British Army to make this happen. This struggle changed how people lived in the new United States. It was a long journey toward freedom.

Many things led to the start of the war. After the Seven Years' War ended in 1763, tensions grew. The British Parliament passed laws like the Stamp Act. These laws created new taxes for the colonists. People felt these taxes were very unfair. In 1770, a sad event called the Boston Massacre occurred. Later, in 1773, people dumped tea into the water during the Boston Tea Party.

Fighting finally began in April 1775. It started with battles at Lexington and Concord.

On July 4, 1776, leaders adopted the Declaration of Independence. This famous document said the colonies were free. The war was often very hard for the Patriot forces. They had to work together to survive.

Winning the war took many important steps. In 1777, an American victory happened at Saratoga.
