Stage management is the art of keeping a show organized. It is a big job that involves many moving parts. A stage manager makes sure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. They oversee the whole rehearsal process from start to finish. They also help different teams talk to each other clearly. This coordination makes sure the show is a success for everyone.

Without them, a production might feel very messy and unorganized.

How does a stage manager actually do their job? They must understand every single part of a production. In a large show, they often work in a team. The head manager is called the production stage manager, or PSM. They have assistants called ASMs who help with many tasks. ASMs might find props or even mop the stage. In the UK, there is also a deputy stage manager, or DSM. The DSM helps cue the crew and follows the director's orders.

The history of this job goes back a very long time. The Ancient Greeks needed someone to help with their plays. Sophocles was a famous person who acted as a technician. In the Middle Ages, a person called a conducteur de secrets helped. This person collected money and acted as a prompter. A prompter held the script to help actors remember lines. During Shakespeare's time, young apprentices often handled these duties. It was not until the 18th century that the term "stage manager" was used in England.

Many famous people once worked in stage management. A writer named Preston Sturges was an ASM when he was 16. He once made a mistake by calling for thunder before lightning. He had to be very careful with his timing. In South Korea, stage planners are very important for K-POP. A famous planner is Kim Sang-wook from the company PLAN A. He helped organize the 'Love Yourself' tour by BTS.

Stage management is useful in many different places. It is not just for plays on a theater stage. You can find stage managers in opera and ballet shows. They also work in film, television, and big music concerts. Some shows happen on cruise ships or in Las Vegas. These shows can run for many years at a time. In these places, managers might even program special computer systems. They make sure the lights and sounds work perfectly every time.
