Sports league

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A sports league is a group of teams or players. They play games against each other to earn points. These points help find an overall champion. Most leagues follow a set schedule called a season.

Some leagues use a system called promotion and relegation. In this way, the best teams move up to a higher group. The worst teams move down to a lower group for the next season. This happens in English football.

Other leagues are closed. This means the same teams play every year. In the United States, many leagues use this model. They might split teams into groups called conferences or divisions. For example, the NBA uses Eastern and Western Conferences. Teams play their division rivals more often than others.

Some leagues use a round-robin style. This means every team plays every other team a set number of times. Often, teams play once at home and once away. This helps keep the games fair for everyone. Some leagues also use playoffs. In a playoff, the top teams play extra games to win the title.

Leagues can also be for single players. Sports like golf or tennis use tours or series. These help rank players against each other.
