These groups have a long history. In Ancient Greece, people made clubs. In the Middle Ages, people formed guilds. Guilds were groups of workers. They helped run towns and made rules for trade. Some guilds even helped start the first universities.

In America, people join many kinds of groups. They join to build schools or to help others. This helps people work together without a king or a big government.

Groups use rules to stay organized. These rules are called bylaws. They tell members how the group works. Some groups are small clubs. Other groups are very large. They can even run big businesses. In some places, groups must register with the state. This helps keep things fair and safe for everyone.
