It first came out in August 1954. Many people think sports news is just for fun. However, this magazine proved that sports stories are important. It was the first magazine with over one million readers to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice. The magazine helps people feel connected to the games they love. It covers many different sports like football, baseball, and basketball.

Making the magazine has changed a lot over the years. In 1965, a new way of printing called offset printing began. This allowed editors to print bright color pages overnight. By 1983, it became the first full-color newsweekly in America. Photographers even had a rivalry to get the best cover shot. They wanted their photos to reach newsstands in just a few days. This made the images look very crisp and fresh for readers.

Creating the magazine was not easy at the start. A man named Henry Luce wanted to fill a gap in news. Many people thought sports news was not serious enough for a magazine. They even gave the idea silly names like "Muscle" or "Sweat Socks." Luce and his team met at the Pine Lakes Country Club in South Carolina. The first issue was even given to that golf course. The magazine did not make any money for the first 12 years.

Many leaders helped the magazine grow into a huge success. Andre Laguerre became the managing editor in 1960. He doubled the number of readers by using many color photos. He also created the famous annual swimsuit issue in 1964. Later, Mark Mulvoy became the youngest managing editor in 1984. He made the swimsuit issue much larger to help the magazine earn more money. He also started a special section just for kids.

Today, the magazine has many different owners and partners. It was owned by Time Inc. for a long time. Later, it was sold to the Authentic Brands Group in 2019. There were some hard times when the staff lost their jobs in early 2024. However, a new company called Minute Media took over in March 2024. They are working to bring the print and digital editions back to life. They are even rehiring some of the original staff members.
