It first came out in August 1954. A man named Henry Luce helped start it. Some people thought sports news was not important. They even gave it silly names like "Sweat Socks." But the magazine became very popular. It helped people follow sports on TV.

In 1965, the magazine began using new printing tools. This made the color photos look bright and sharp. In 1983, it became the first news magazine to use full color. The magazine is known for many things. It has a special swimsuit issue every year. It also has long stories called "bonus pieces." These stories help readers learn more about sports stars. Many famous writers worked there. The magazine has seen many changes in owners. Now, a company called Minute Media helps run it. They are working to bring the magazine back to readers.
