Writers report on games and big contests. They might tell a story play by play. They might also write deep studies on the sport.

In the early 1800s, newspapers wrote about horse racing and boxing. At first, only rich people could buy them. Later, the penny press made newspapers much cheaper. This helped more people read about sports. By the 1920s, sports news grew a lot. This was called the Golden Age of American Sports.

During this time, newspapers used more photos. They also hired beat reporters. These writers travel with teams and talk to players. Many stadiums even have a press box for them to sit in.

Today, the internet has changed everything. Many people read news on websites or Twitter.
