Sphynx cat

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Sphynx cat is a very special breed of cat. Most cats have thick fur to keep them warm. However, the Sphynx is famous because it lacks fur. This hairlessness is a natural genetic mutation. A mutation is a tiny change in a cat's genes. This specific change affects a gene called KRT71. This gene helps make strong hair that stays in the skin. In Sphynx cats, the mutation makes the hair very weak. The hair lacks a solid root or bulb. Because of this, the hair is fragile and falls out easily.

These cats have a very distinct look. They often have wedge-shaped heads with large cheekbones. Their eyes are big and shaped like lemons. They also have very large ears with soft hair on the outside. Many people notice their skin feels like chamois leather. The skin can be many colors, like tabby or solid patterns. Their bodies are often muscular with a round belly. They even have thick paw pads that look like cushions. Their tails are long and look like whips.

People have been working with these cats since the 1960s. The breed started in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A hairless male kitten named Prune was born there in 1966. He was born to a mother named Elizabeth. A science graduate named Ridyadh Bawa helped develop the breed. He worked with his mother, Yania, and others named Keese and Rita Tenhoves. They learned how the hairless gene worked. They used this knowledge to create a successful breeding program. Later, other cats were found to help the breed grow.

Different groups of breeders found hairless cats in different places. In the 1970s, two sets of hairless cats were found in North America. In 1975, two cats named Dermis and Epidermis were born in Minnesota. They were part of a group of barn cats. In 1978, Shirley Smith found three hairless kittens in Toronto. She named two of them Punkie and Paloma. She sent them to the Netherlands to breed with a cat named Curare van Jetrophin. This helped create more Sphynx cats.

Because they have no fur, Sphynx cats act differently than other pets. They lose body heat very quickly. This means they love to find warm spots to sleep. They also love to cuddle with people to stay warm. They are very smart, curious, and active. Some people say they act more like dogs than cats. They might even run to the door to greet you. Owners must be careful to protect their skin. Without fur, these cats can get sunburned by the sun. They also need help staying warm in the winter.
