Many people live in this area. In 2009, the population was about 160,000 people. People travel through the town using buses, mini buses, and taxis from a central transport hub.

The town has a very long and important history. The Spanish first founded a settlement here in 1534. They called it Villa de la Vega. It was the first European home on the south of the island. Indigenous Taino people had lived in this area for a thousand years before that. Later, the English took control of Jamaica in 1655. They renamed the place Spanish Town to honor its Spanish roots.

Spanish Town served as the capital of Jamaica for many years. It held this role from 1534 until 1872. During the English rule, the town was sometimes damaged. For a while, Port Royal acted as the unofficial capital. However, a big earthquake hit Port Royal in 1692. After that, Spanish Town was rebuilt and became the capital again. Eventually, the government moved to Kingston in 1872. This happened because Kingston was a larger port and a better place for the capital.

There are many interesting things to see in the town. You can find an old iron bridge that crosses the Rio Cobre. A man named Thomas Wilson designed this bridge in 1801.

The town also has many old buildings and churches. One Anglican church is one of the oldest outside of England. You can see street names like Red Church and White Church. These names remind people of the old Spanish chapels. There are also many different places to pray, including a mosque.

Spanish Town is also a place where many famous people were born.
