Spamming is the act of sending many unwanted messages to many people.

These messages are often used for commercial advertising or to spread ideas. Sometimes, spam is sent to trick people, which is called phishing. A person who creates these messages is known as a spammer. It can also mean sending the same message to one person over and over. While email is the most common kind, spam happens in many places. It can show up in text messages, social media, or even video sites.

Spamming works because it is very easy and cheap for the sender. Spammers do not have many costs to send out their messages. They only need to manage mailing lists, servers, and domain names. Because it costs so little, it remains a common way to reach people. However, the public and internet providers must pay the costs. These costs include lost time and the work needed to stop fraud. Internet service providers even add extra capacity to handle the huge volume.

The name for this practice comes from a funny comedy sketch.

In a 1970 show by Monty Python, a waitress reads a menu. Almost every single item on the menu includes a meat called Spam. A group of Vikings then sings the word "Spam" repeatedly. This singing drowns out all other talk in the cafe. In the 1980s, people used this name for users who flooded screens with text. They wanted to scroll other people's words off the screen.

There is a long history of mass messages being sent. In May 1864, a British politician received an unwanted telegram about a dentist. On May 3, 1978, Gary Thuerk sent a mass message on ARPANET. He sent it to 393 people to advertise new computers. In 1994, lawyers Laurence Canter and Martha Siegel sent many Usenet posts. Their messages were about immigration law, so people called it "Green Card spam." By 1999, a hacker named Khan C. Smith began to turn bulk email into a business.

You might see spam in many parts of your digital life. It can appear as junk mail in your email inbox. Some spam uses mobile phone text messages to reach you. On social media sites like Facebook, spammers might use fake accounts. They may even hack accounts to send links to your friends. On sites like YouTube, spam videos might claim a movie is deleted. These videos use the description to lead you to a different link.
