Sardines as food

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sardines are small, oily fish that people all over the world enjoy eating. They are very healthy because they are full of vitamins and minerals. These little fish provide plenty of vitamin B12 and vitamin B2. They also have omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for your heart and your brain. Because sardines are low in the food chain, they have very little mercury in them. This makes them a safer choice than some larger fish.

There are many ways to prepare these fish for a meal. At a factory, workers wash the fish and remove their heads. They might cook them by steaming or deep-frying them before they are dried. Many people buy them in cans filled with water or olive oil. You might also find them in a tasty tomato or mustard sauce. In some places, like the Canary Islands, people grill them over volcanic vents.

People have been fishing for sardines for a very long time. In Croatia, people have caught them for thousands of years. In the 1800s, a place called Douarnenez in France was a world leader in sending sardines to other countries. In England, a town called Cornwall had a huge sardine industry from 1750 to 1880. Today, many places still use old traditions to catch them. Some fishers even use lateen sail boats for special festivals.

Different countries have their own special ways to use sardines. In Greece, they are often served at seaside restaurants with lemon and garlic. In Italy, Sicily has a famous pasta dish made with sardines and fennel. Morocco is the biggest exporter of canned sardines in the whole world. In Australia, many sardines are used to feed tuna in sea cages. Even in the Philippines, sardines are a very important food for families.

Sardines are useful for much more than just eating. Some sardines are turned into fish meal to feed animals. Sardine oil is even used to make things like paint and varnish. The way fish are packed tightly in a can gave us a famous saying. We say people are "packed like sardines" when a place is very crowded. There is even a children's game with that same name.
