As of 2024, it is the fourth-largest airline in North America. This rank is measured by how many passengers the airline carries. The company serves over 100 different destinations. These locations include 42 states and Washington, D.C. It also flies to Puerto Rico and ten other places. These include Mexico, the Bahamas, and Jamaica.

The airline uses a special way to fly between cities. Most big airlines use a hub-and-spoke system. Southwest uses a point-to-point system instead. They also use a rolling-hub model in their base cities. This means they do not have one main central hub. Instead, they have some airports with more destinations than others. They use a fleet made only of Boeing 737 planes.

This helps them keep their work steady and fast.

Southwest has a long history that began many years ago. Herb Kelleher and Rollin King started the company on March 9, 1967. At first, they called it Air Southwest Co. In 1971, they changed the name to Southwest Airlines Co. At that time, they only flew within the state of Texas. Their first flights went between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. They began flying to other states in 1979. The airline grew much larger in the decades that followed.

There are many interesting facts about how the airline works. For a long time, they used an open seating policy. Passengers picked any available seat after getting a boarding group.

This changed on January 27, 2026, when they moved to assigned seating. The airline also has a program called Rapid Rewards. It started on June 18, 1987, as The Company Club. Members earn points based on their trips. In 2011, the system changed to use ticket prices to award points. These points do not expire if the member stays active.

Southwest is a model that many other airlines study. Other low-cost carriers use similar ways to run their businesses. In Europe, airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair follow this style. Many other airlines like WestJet in Canada and AirAsia in Asia use it too. Southwest focuses on being very productive with their planes and workers. They try to keep the time planes spend at the gate very short. This helps them keep their costs low for passengers.
