The history of Delta is quite surprising. It began on March 2, 1925, in Macon, Georgia. At first, it was not an airline for people. It was called Huff Daland Dusters, Inc. The company used planes for crop dusting. This meant they sprayed fields to help cotton crops. They used a special plane called a Huff-Daland Duster. The first flight went to a peach orchard in Montezuma, Georgia.

Delta grew into a passenger airline over many years. In 1929, it began flights from Dallas, Texas, to Jackson, Mississippi. A man named C.E. Woolman helped lead the company. Delta Air Service was incorporated on December 3, 1928. It was named after the Mississippi Delta region. The company moved its main office to Atlanta in 1941. In 1945, the name officially became Delta Air Lines. It even started flying international routes in 1953.

You might recognize Delta from your own travels. Many people fly on large jets to go on vacation. Delta was the first to fly the Douglas DC-8 in 1959. It also used the first Convair 880 jets in 1960. Today, Delta is a leader in the airline world. It ranks first in revenue and brand value. It is the second-oldest commercial airline still running in the U.S.
