The word skandha comes from Sanskrit and means a heap or a collection. In Buddhism, this idea describes five different factors. These factors are called the five aggregates. They help explain how a person's mind and body work together. Some thinkers see them as parts of a person's personality. Others see them as things that cause craving or clinging.

There are five specific parts in this collection. The first is form, which is the physical body. This body is made of earth, water, fire, and wind. The second is sensation, which are feelings like pleasure or pain. The third is perception, which is how we recognize things like colors. The fourth is mental formations, which are activities in the mind. The fifth is consciousness, which is the nature of knowing or awareness.

Many traditions explain how these parts interact. In the Theravada tradition, people feel unease or suffering when they cling to these aggregates. This suffering can be ended by letting go of those attachments. Both Theravada and Mahayana traditions say the aggregates are empty. This means they do not have an independent or permanent existence. They do not form a permanent "self" of any kind.

This idea is quite unique among major Indian religions. For example, Hinduism and Jainism believe in an eternal soul. Buddhism instead uses the skandhas to explain a person. The 14th Dalai Lama follows the idea that these aggregates explain personality. Some scholars say the Buddha did not define a "person." Instead, they suggest the skandhas are activities that happen.

There is also a related way to look at experience. This involves eighteen elements called dhatus. These include six sense objects like sounds and smells. They also include six sense faculties like the eyes and ears. Finally, there are six types of consciousness. These eighteen elements work together with the five aggregates. They provide a full way to study how we experience life.
