Saṃjñā is a special word used in many different traditions. In Buddhism, it usually means perception or cognition. This is the way we recognize things. It is how we notice the features of an object. This helps us tell one thing from another. People use this term to talk about how we understand the world.

How does this perception actually work? Think of it as a way of making a mental mark. When we see something, we note its specific traits. This allows us to recognize that same thing again later. A carpenter might mark a piece of wood to identify it. A woodcutter might do something similar with logs. In this way, Saṃjñā helps us remember what we have seen.

This idea appears in many ancient Buddhist texts. In the Theravada tradition, it is one of the five aggregates. These aggregates are groups used to describe our experiences. Saṃjñā is also one of the seven universal mental factors in the Theravada Abhidharma. In the Mahayana tradition, it is one of five universal mental factors. These teachings help people understand the mind during meditation.

There are many interesting details about how Saṃjñā behaves. Some thinkers say it is very brief. It can be as fast as a flash of lightning. This is because it does not always stay with an object. Sometimes, it can lead to mistakes. For example, a young deer might see a scarecrow. The deer might think the scarecrow is a person.

Saṃjñā is not just found in Buddhism. It has different meanings in other Indian religions too. In Hinduism, the word refers to art traditions. In Jainism, it points to a type of recognition. These different uses show how much people wonder about the mind. By studying these terms, we learn how different faiths view the world.
