He was the founder and first king of a place called Ephyra. This place is known today as Corinth. Sisyphus was known as one of the craftiest men ever. He was a prince from Thessaly. His father was King Aeolus of Aeolia. His mother was a woman named Enarete. He had many siblings, including a brother named Salmoneus. Sisyphus also had a large family of his own. He married a woman named Merope. Together they had several children, such as Glaucus and Almus.

His life was full of clever tricks and conflicts. Sisyphus once told a secret about the god Zeus. He told the river god Asopus about Zeus and Aegina. He did this to get a spring for his city. This choice made Zeus very angry. Sisyphus also had a bad relationship with his brother. He even tried to find ways to kill Salmoneus. He was so tricky that he once trapped Thanatos, the god of death, in chains. Because of this, no one could die on Earth for a while. This caused a huge uproar among the gods. Eventually, the gods made sure he faced the consequences of his actions.

After he died, Sisyphus went to the underworld.

He received a very hard punishment in a place called Tartarus. Hades, the ruler of the underworld, gave him a task. Sisyphus had to roll a huge boulder up a steep hill. The work was meant to be endless and frustrating. Every time he almost reached the top, the rock would roll back down. Hades used magic to make the boulder roll away. This meant Sisyphus had to start over every single time. He was stuck in this cycle for all of eternity.

Many people have looked at this story for a long time. Some thinkers use his name to describe certain things. We use the word "Sisyphean" to describe tasks that are very hard but feel useless. The philosopher Lucretius thought the myth represented politicians seeking power. Others thought the story symbolized the sun rising and setting each day. In 1942, Albert Camus wrote an essay called "The Myth of Sisyphus." He had a very unique view of the story. He suggested that we should imagine Sisyphus is happy. He believed the struggle itself could fill a person's heart.

Artists have also loved to draw Sisyphus through the years.

The painter Titian made a famous painting of him. Ancient writers like Homer and Ovid also wrote about his life. Some people even see his name in the sounds of breathing. They think the name might come from a sound made by the breath. Today, his story is still used in many places. It appears in books, cartoons, and even TV shows. His legend helps us think about hard work and the meaning of life. Even after thousands of years, his name is still well known.
