Sisyphus was a king of a place called Ephyra.

Punishment sisyph
Punishment sisyph

He was known for being very clever. One time, he told a secret about the god Zeus. This made the gods very angry with him.

Because he tried to trick the gods, he was punished. He had to go to the underworld. There, he had to roll a huge rock up a hill.

The rock would roll back down every time. It would roll down right before he reached the top. He had to start all over again. This went on forever and ever.

Today, people use his name for hard jobs. They call a job "Sisyphean" if it never ends. It is a way to describe work that feels pointless.
