It flows near Alexandra Road and ends at the Marina Reservoir. The river is about 3.2 kilometers long from Kim Seng Bridge to Marina Bay.

It also continues as the Alexandra Canal for more than two kilometers. This river is part of a large planning area in the Central Region. This area is surrounded by places like River Valley and the Downtown Core. The river is divided into three main areas called wharfs or quays. These are Robertson Quay, Clarke Quay, and Boat Quay.

Long ago, the river was a very busy place for trade. Many boats like lighters moved goods along the water. In 1977, there were about 750 of these boats in the area. However, the river became very dirty and polluted. Waste from pig and duck farms flowed into the water. Garbage and sewage from industries also made the river smell bad. Even street hawkers and vegetable sellers added waste to the banks. Oil spills from the many boats made the problem even worse.

History tells us that a prince named Sang Nila Utama visited this area. In the year 1299, he landed at the river's mouth. This place was once an ancient fishing village called Temasek. The prince saw a strange animal with a red body. He thought it was a lion and renamed the area Singapura.

Old maps show the river started at Bukit Larangan. This place is known today as Fort Canning Hill. Many people worked hard along these banks for a long time.

In 1977, Prime Minister Lee called for a massive clean-up. This was a very big job that cost $300 million. The government moved about 4,000 squatters to new public housing. They also moved hawkers to special food centres. Workers dredged the foul-smelling mud from the river bottom. They cleared away all the rubbish and debris.

Since 2008, the river has been fresh water. This happened after the Marina Barrage dam was finished. Now, the river is part of the Marina Reservoir.

Today, the river looks very different from the past. It is clean enough for animals like otters and monitor lizards. Instead of heavy trade, the river is now for tourism. You can ride a water taxi across the water. Many beautiful bridges cross the river, like the Helix Bridge from 2010.

You can also see many art sculptures along the banks. These statues show how people lived and worked long ago. They remind us of the river's important history.
