Long ago, the river was very dirty. Garbage and waste from farms went into the water. Many boats also spilled oil. In 1977, the leaders started a big clean-up. They spent $300 million to fix it. They moved people and cleaned the mud from the bottom.

Now, the river is clean and full of fresh water. A dam called the Marina Barrage keeps the water fresh. Because it is clean, animals like otters live there now. You can see many bridges over the river. Some are very old. Others are new, like the Helix Bridge from 2010. Today, people visit the river for fun. You can take a water taxi to cross it. There are also many art statues along the banks. These show how people lived and worked there in the past.
