He was born on February 19, 1793, in Pennsylvania. As a young boy, he loved reading history books. He was very good at studying grammar and using precise words. This helped him become a great scholar of the Bible. He spent much of his early life on a farm. Later, he became a minister for the Baptist church. He moved to many places, including Ohio and Pittsburgh, to preach.

Rigdon's life changed when he joined the Church of Christ. In 1830, he read the Book of Mormon in only fourteen days. After reading it, he told others it was true. He was baptized in Mentor, Ohio, on November 14, 1830. He soon met Joseph Smith and became a close partner.

Rigdon was a very powerful speaker. He was often called to be the spokesman for the church. He also helped Smith with translating the Bible. Some accounts say the two men even shared visions together.

Being a leader was often a difficult job for Rigdon. In March 1832, he and Joseph Smith were attacked at a farm. This was a very hard and painful event for them. Later, Rigdon helped lead the church in Kirtland, Ohio. He was part of the First Presidency starting in 1833. He also helped run a bank called the Kirtland Safety Society. When the bank failed in 1837, many people blamed Rigdon and Smith. These hard times tested his role in the group.

In 1838, the group moved to Far West, Missouri. Rigdon gave several famous speeches there, such as the July 4th Oration. Some believe these speeches helped cause the Mormon War in Missouri. Because of the fighting, Rigdon and Smith were arrested. They were sent to a place called Liberty Jail.

Eventually, they were released and moved to Illinois. This was a time of great change and movement for the followers.

In Nauvoo, Illinois, Rigdon continued to serve as a spokesman. He was ordained as a prophet, seer, and revelator in 1841. However, his relationship with Joseph Smith began to change. There were disagreements and accusations within the church leadership. In October 1843, a special meeting was held to discuss Rigdon's standing. While some people were unhappy with him, the congregation voted to let him keep his position. Rigdon's long journey shows how much the early church changed over time.
