He was born on the plains between 1831 and 1837. Some family stories say he was born near the Yellowstone River. At birth, his name was Jumping Badger. Later, he was nicknamed Slow because he was very careful. When he was 14, he showed great bravery in a raid. His father gave him a new name during a feast. This name was Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake, which means Buffalo Bull Who Sits Down.

As a leader, Sitting Bull fought to protect his people's way of life. He resisted many United States government policies. Between 1866 and 1868, he helped in Red Cloud's War. He led many attacks against various forts in the Missouri area. In 1868, the government signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie. Many Lakota leaders signed this treaty to find peace. Sitting Bull refused to sign it. He told a missionary that he would not sell his country. He wanted his people to remain independent and free.

Things became very difficult after gold was found in the Black Hills. In 1874, George Armstrong Custer led an expedition to find gold there. This caused a gold rush that brought many new people to Lakota lands. The U.S. government pressured the Sioux to give up the Black Hills. In 1876, the government ordered many Sioux bands to move onto reservations. Sitting Bull and his people did not comply with this order. They stayed out on the plains to keep their freedom. This led to a period of great conflict known as the Great Sioux War.

Before a major battle in 1876, Sitting Bull had a famous vision. He saw many soldiers falling into his camp like grasshoppers. This vision seemed to come true during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. On June 25, 1876, the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne defeated the 7th Cavalry. This battle included the battalion led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer.

After this victory, the U.S. government sent thousands more soldiers to the area. This forced many Lakota to surrender over the next year.

Sitting Bull eventually surrendered to U.S. forces in 1881. He even worked as a performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Later, he returned to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota. In 1890, officials feared he would support the Ghost Dance movement. They sent police to arrest him at Fort Yates. A struggle broke out between his followers and the police. During the fight, Sitting Bull was shot and killed.
