This war happened between 1866 and 1868 in the Wyoming and Montana territories. The U.S. Army fought against the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. One of the biggest battles was the Fetterman Fight in December 1866. In this battle, a group of Native American warriors defeated a large unit of U.S. soldiers. It was a very big defeat for the Army on the Great Plains. This victory helped the Lakota people reach a peace agreement.

After the fighting, the leaders signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868.

This treaty meant the U.S. would leave certain lands and move its forts. The treaty also said the Black Hills and Big Horn were Indian countries. Red Cloud led his people as they moved to live on a reservation. He even traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet President Ulysses S. Grant. He wanted to make sure the government kept its promises to his people.

Life on the reservation was often very hard for the Lakota.

In 1874, gold was found in the Black Hills. This caused many white miners to enter Lakota land, even though the treaty said they should not. Red Cloud tried to stop this by talking to leaders in Washington. He was not successful in keeping the gold hunters away. Later, the government passed the Dawes Act in 1887. This law changed how the tribes held their land. Red Cloud fought hard against these changes to protect his people.

Red Cloud was a very important figure in the nineteenth century.

People still honor his memory and his strength as a leader.
