He was born on August 8, 1839, on a family farm in Westminster, Massachusetts. Before he became a soldier, he worked as a clerk in a store in Boston. He even went to a business school at night to learn more. This early life helped him prepare for a long career in the military. He lived through many different parts of American history.

Miles first joined the army during the American Civil War in 1861. He started as a first lieutenant in the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. As the war continued, he was promoted to higher ranks like colonel. He fought in many famous battles, such as Antietam and Chancellorsville. During these fights, he was wounded four times. For his bravery at the Battle of Chancellorsville, he later received the Medal of Honor.

After the Civil War, Miles led many campaigns during the American Indian Wars. He was often called "Bearcoat" because he wore a special coat made of bearskin fur. He worked in many places, including the Great Plains and the Arizona Territory. One way he helped his troops was by using a tool called a heliograph. This device used mirrors to send signals with sunlight over long distances. He also led troops during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Miles was a leader who sometimes spoke out against things he thought were wrong. He was very upset by the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890. He called it a horrible mistake and fought to get money for the survivors. Later, he also spoke out against how the army treated people in the Philippines. He believed that soldiers should follow fair rules even during a war. These choices showed that he had strong ideas about how leaders should act.

Even when he was getting older, Miles stayed very active. In 1903, he wanted to prove he was still strong. He rode a horse for 90 miles from Fort Sill to Fort Reno in Oklahoma. This was the longest ride ever made by a commanding general. He retired from the army that same year at age 64. He lived until 1925 and died at the age of 85.
