This animal is a slender member of the dog family. It has a buff-grey pelt that helps it blend into its home. The back is a darker grey than the belly. A black tail has a silver tip. You can see white stripes on its sides. These stripes run from the elbow to the hip.

This jackal is a highly adaptable omnivore. An omnivore is an animal that eats many different types of food. Their diet changes based on the season and where they live. In the wet season, they mostly eat invertebrates like bugs. During dry months, they look for small mammals like the springhare.

They also eat fruit when it is in season. In places near people, fruit can make up 30% of what they eat. They are also known to scavenge near human campsites. One jackal in Angola was even found to have a worm called Pachysentis angolensis in its body.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. A Swedish zoologist named Carl Jakob Sundevall named the species in 1847.

Later, a German zoologist named Max Hilzheimer suggested a different name in 1906. Fossil remains show that these jackals have been around since the Pliocene era. DNA evidence shows they belong to a special group. This group includes the black-backed jackal. This evidence suggests that these animals likely started in Africa.

There are many different types of this jackal. There are seven recognized subspecies in total.

One is called the Elgon side-striped jackal in East Africa. Another is the Kaffa side-striped jackal in Ethiopia. There is also the Loita side-striped jackal in the Rift Valley. Some live in Morocco and Tunisia, while others live in West Africa. These different groups help the species live in many places.

Side-striped jackals have a very interesting social life. They can live alone or in small family groups.

A family group can have up to seven members. Some groups in Zimbabwe have been seen with twelve jackals. Most importantly, they are often monogamous. This means a male and female mate for life. In Southern Africa, the breeding season starts in June. A mother carries her young for 57 to 70 days. She usually has a litter of three to six babies.
