These animals are very important parts of their wild homes.

Jackals have a special way of finding food. They are opportunistic omnivores. This means they eat many different kinds of things. They hunt small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They are also good scavengers. A scavenger is an animal that eats meat from things that are already dead.

Their bodies are built for this hard job. They have long legs and large feet. These help them run for a long time. Their curved teeth are perfect for catching prey.

Scientists have studied jackals for a long time. In 1815, a man named Lorenz Oken thought they were a separate group. He named them after a Greek word. Later, in 1932, Angel Cabrera looked at their teeth. He decided they should stay in the same group as dogs.

In 1914, Edmund Heller brought back some of the old ideas. He gave many names to different jackal species. These names are still used by scientists today. Learning about them helps us understand how all dogs are related.

There are many facts to know about these animals. The black-backed jackal is the most aggressive. It can even attack animals much heavier than itself.

The side-striped jackal is the calmest. It likes to live in wooded areas. The golden jackal is the most widespread. It is actually more like a wolf than the African jackals. All these animals have 78 chromosomes. This is a tiny part of their cells that helps them grow.

Jackals are also part of many human stories. They appear in the Bible about 14 times. In some old stories, they are seen as wise.

Some people even think the Egyptian god Anubis looked like a golden jackal. In the Serer religion, they were among the first animals made. Jackals often live near places where humans used to live. This makes them a part of our history and our legends. They are truly amazing creatures to study.
