Some people call them prairie wolves or brush wolves. They are smaller than the gray wolf. They are also a bit smaller than the red wolf. These animals are very good at living in many places. They can live in the wild or in big cities. This ability to change makes them very successful.

A coyote's body helps it survive in different homes. Their fur is mostly light gray or red. It also has black and white hair mixed in. Coyotes in high mountains often have more black and gray fur. Those in the desert might look more whitish-gray. Their fur has two layers. There is a short, soft underfur for warmth. There are also long, coarse guard hairs on top.

Scientists have studied how coyotes changed over a long time. They believe the coyote came from an older animal called Eucyon davisi. This animal lived about 6 million years ago. Later, a larger animal called Canis lepophagus appeared. The modern coyote we see today began to exist about 1 million years ago.

These animals have changed their size over time. When big prey died out, coyotes became smaller. This helped them find new ways to live.

Coyotes have many different names and facts about them. The word "coyote" comes from the Nahuatl word coyōtl.

There are 19 different subspecies of coyotes. A very large male was found in Afton, Wyoming. This coyote lived in 1937 and weighed 110 pounds. Its total length was 55 inches from nose to tail. Most coyotes are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They eat deer, rabbits, and even fish. They also eat fruits and vegetables sometimes.

Many people have stories about the coyote. In Native American folklore, the coyote is often a trickster. This means the animal uses humor or tricks to get what it wants. In old Mesoamerican stories, it was a symbol of military strength. Later, in Anglo-American culture, people saw them as untrustworthy.
