It belongs to a group called Urocyon. This group is different from all other dog-like animals. The only other living member is the tiny island fox. The name of this species means "ashen silver." This name describes the color of its beautiful tail.

Gray foxes live in many places. They can be found from southern Canada all the way to Colombia. They are the only dog-like animals that live in both North and South America.

This fox has many unique features. It has a black stripe running down the middle of its tail. The tip of its tail is also black. Its fur has white, gray, and black colors mixed together. You can see white on its ears, throat, and belly.

Unlike the red fox, the gray fox has oval pupils in its eyes. It also lacks the black "stockings" on its legs that red foxes have. Its skull has a special U-shape. This shape is easy to see on the ridges of its head. These small details help people tell it apart from other animals.

One of the most amazing things about the gray fox is how it moves. It is built to climb trees.

Its claws are long and curved. These claws let the fox scramble up vertical tree trunks. It can even jump from one branch to another. Climbing helps the fox reach food or hide from predators like coyotes. When it comes down, it often jumps from branch to branch. Sometimes, it even climbs down backward like a house cat.

Gray foxes have a very interesting history.

Fossil evidence shows they appeared in North America a long time ago. They lived alongside giant sloths and early horses. Scientists found these remains in places like Graham County, Arizona. Long ago, they were the most common foxes in the eastern United States. Now, the red fox is more common there because of human changes to the land. However, the gray fox is very good at living near people. You can find them in many cities and suburbs today.

These foxes are omnivores, so they eat many different things.

They hunt small animals like mice, voles, and birds. They also eat a lot of plants and fruit. In the spring, they enjoy eating insects like beetles and moths. They are very smart about their food. When they find extra nuts or fruit, they hide it for later. They use their scent to mark these spots. This helps them find the food again and keeps other animals away.
