It has reddish-rusty fur with black stripes. In the winter, their fur can look very pale. These tigers live in the cold woods of Northeast China and the Russian Far East.

Scientists study how these tigers are related to other cats. They look at mitochondrial DNA. This is a type of genetic code passed from mothers to babies. This code shows that the Siberian tiger is a close relative of the Caspian tiger. Both groups once lived in parts of Central Asia.

These tigers have long, supple bodies. They stand on short legs and have long tails. They are often called the largest tigers. In the past, they were even heavier than they are now. Today, they are often lighter than Bengal tigers. This may be because there is less food to eat.

People work hard to protect them. In 2022, about 756 tigers lived in the Russian Far East. This group included 200 cubs.
