Many people believe it is the most sacred Buddhist site in the country. This is because it is thought to hold relics from four past Buddhas. These include a staff, a water filter, a piece of a robe, and eight strands of hair.

The design of the pagoda is very detailed and beautiful.

It starts with a base made of bricks covered in gold plates. Above the base are terraces that only certain people may enter. The structure then rises into a bell shape. It continues upward through a turban and an inverted almsbowl. Near the top, there are lotus petals and a banana bud. The very top is a crown called a hti. This crown is decorated with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies.

A single 76-carat diamond sits at the very tip.

Legends say the pagoda was built over 2,500 years ago.

This would make it the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. The story tells of two merchants named Tapussa and Bhallika. They met the Buddha and offered him honey and rice cake. In return, the Buddha gave them eight strands of his hair. The merchants gave these hairs to King Okkalapa of Dagon. He placed them in a stupa on Singuttara Hill. Later, Queen Shin Saw Pu raised the height and gilded the structure in the 1400s.

Visitors follow special customs when they arrive at the pagoda.

There are four entrances guarded by giant leogryphs. It is customary to walk around the stupa in a clockwise direction. People also visit eight small shrines around the base. These shrines represent the eight days of the Burmese week. For example, Sunday is represented by a garuda. Friday is represented by a guinea pig. At these posts, people perform a blessing ritual. They pour water over Buddha images to make a wish.

History shows that the pagoda has faced many changes.

Earthquakes have caused damage over many centuries. A large earthquake in 1768 broke the top of the stupa. King Hsinbyushin raised it back up in 1775. The pagoda has also been part of many wars. In 1824, British soldiers used the site as a fortress. Even during hard times, people have worked to protect its treasures. Today, it remains a very important place for prayer and festivals.
