It sits in the Qalyubia Governorate. The city is near the northern edge of the Cairo Governorate. It is part of a huge area called Greater Cairo. This area includes the cities of Cairo and Giza. Shubra El Kheima is the fourth-largest city in Egypt. It is smaller than Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria.

Many things help people move around this busy city. The Shubra El Kheima station is a main stop. It is the northern end of Line 2 of the Cairo Metro. There is also a station for the Egyptian National Railways nearby. People use taxis and many different types of buses. Some buses belong to the CTA. Others are private. In some poorer districts, people ride in small vehicles called tuk tuks. Small microbuses also serve the city.

This city has a very interesting history. Long ago, it was just a small village on the Nile. In 1908, Mohamed Ali built a palace nearby. He used it as a place to rest in the countryside. During the 20th century, the area changed a lot. It became a major hub for industry. This meant many factories were built there. Workers and their families moved to the area for jobs.

Many people live in Shubra El Kheima today. The 2017 census counted 1,161,514 people living there. The city is split into two main districts. District 1 has 481,936 people. It contains three smaller areas called shiakhas. These are Bijam, Damanhur Shubra, and Shubra al-Khayma. District 2 is even larger with 679,578 people. This district includes Bahtim and Musturud.
