It sits near the edge of the city and has a very long history. People have been active in this area since prehistoric times. Long ago, there was a cemetery near Helwan that served the famous ancient city of Memphis. The area has seen many different groups of people over the years. It was part of the Roman and Muslim eras too. Today, it is a large suburb where many people live and work.

This place has changed many times throughout history. In the year 689, Helwan became a temporary capital for Umayyad Egypt. A leader named Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan founded it during that time. Much later, in the 1960s, Helwan was a separate city. It even became the capital of its own governorate for a short time. This happened between April 2008 and April 2011. After that, it was joined back into the Cairo and Giza areas.

These factories make things like iron, steel, textiles, and cement. They even make different kinds of cars, such as the Fiat 1100. The factories use iron from the western deserts and power from the Aswan Dam.

There are many interesting sites to see in Helwan. You can visit an astronomical observatory that was built in 1903. Scientists once used it to watch Halley's Comet pass by. There are also hot sulphur springs in the area. For health, the Behman Hospital was built there in 1939. This is the largest private hospital for mental health in Egypt. The area also has Helwan University for students to study.
