All districts returned to their previous statuses, and Helwan became a district once more.
In the 20th century, Helwan became a center for science and medicine. The Khedivial Astronomical Observatory was constructed between 1903 and 1904. Scientists used this facility to observe Halley's Comet. Notable astronomy specialists like Harold Knox-Shaw and John Reynolds worked there. In 1939, the Behman Hospital was built in the area. It is Egypt's largest and oldest private psychiatric clinic. The district also hosted RAF Helwan, a major British airfield. This site was later used by the Egyptian Air Force. These institutions helped establish Helwan as a place of specialized activity.
Industrialization transformed Helwan into a massive economic zone. In 1959, President Gamal Abdel Nasser chose the site for a major industrial city. This was part of his plan to industrialize Egypt. 
The automobile industry in Helwan has produced many different models. Factories there manufactured cars such as the Fiat 1100, 1300, and 1500. Other models include the Fiat 2300 and the Polski Fiat 125p. The area also produced the FSO Polonez and the Fiat Ritmo. 
Helwan is home to a large and diverse population. According to the 2017 census, the kism of Helwan had 521,239 residents. These people live across eight different census blocks, known as shiakhas. These blocks include `Ayn Ḥulwân, Kafr al-`Uluw, and Masâkin al-Iqtiṣâdiyya. Other blocks are Ḥulwân al-balad, Ḥulwân al-baḥriyya, Ḥulwân al-gharbiyya, Ḥulwân al-qibliyya, and Ḥulwân al-sharqiyya. The district also contains various landmarks like Helwan University. There are even hot sulphur springs and a burial chamber discovered in 1946. These features make the district a unique part of the Egyptian landscape.
