The Banu Hilal were a large group of Arab people.

They lived a nomadic life, which means they moved often. They spent their time looking for pastures for their sheep and cattle. This group came from a region called Najd. Najd is located in the central part of the Arabian Peninsula. They were a very large nation. They were actually divided into many smaller sub-tribes. Some of these notable sub-tribes were the Athbaj and the Riyah.

Their journey across the world happened in many steps. First, they lived in the Najd region for a long time. Later, some members moved to Egypt during the early 8th century. In the 9th century, they moved toward Iraq and the Levant. Finally, a massive migration to North Africa began in the 11th century. This move was helped by the Fatimid Caliphate. The Caliph gave each tribesman money and a camel to help. A severe drought in Egypt also made the move necessary.

History shows that the Fatimid Caliphs used the tribe to reach a goal. The Zirid dynasty had become independent from the Fatimid Caliphate. To punish the Zirids, the Fatimids sent the Banu Hilal to the Maghreb. The Maghreb is a large region in North Africa. It includes places like Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. The tribes traveled west across the Nile River. They eventually won battles against Berber tribes in the area. This helped them settle in new lands like the high plains of Algiers.

Many people were part of this great movement. Historians have different ideas about the exact number of people. Some estimates say between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people migrated. One historian, Mármol Carvajal, believed more than a million people moved. Another estimate suggests 200,000 families traveled west out of Egypt.

In the 16th century, the population was estimated at 920,250. These large numbers show how much the group changed the region.

This migration changed North Africa in many ways. The Banu Hilal helped spread the Arabic language to rural areas. They also spread the nomadic way of life to new places. Before they arrived, many areas focused mostly on farming. Their presence helped shape the culture and the people of the Maghreb. Their amazing story is even kept alive through art. Bards and poets tell the "Taghribat Banu Hilal." This is a famous epic poem about their long journey.
