The Banu Hilal were a large group of Arab people.

Long ago, they lived in a place called Najd. This area is in the center of the Arabian Peninsula. They were nomads. This means they moved often to find food for their sheep and cattle.

In the 11th century, a big change happened. The Fatimid Caliphate ruled Egypt at that time. They wanted to punish a group called the Zirids. To do this, the Caliph sent the Banu Hilal to North Africa. He gave each person money and a camel. A dry time in Egypt also made them want to move.

They traveled west to lands like Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria.

Many people moved with them. Some say up to one million people traveled. They brought their wives and children too. This group changed the culture in North Africa. They helped spread their way of life and their language.

Their long journey is told in a famous epic poem.
