history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Nabataean Kingdom was a powerful state of Arab people. They lived during a time called classical antiquity. This kingdom sat in a very important part of the world. It stretched south through the Tihamah and the Hejaz. It even reached as far north as Damascus for a short time. The Nabataeans controlled many busy trade paths in the region.

This control helped them become very wealthy and strong.

Life for the Nabataeans began with moving around the desert. They were nomads who lived with herds of animals. They moved to find grass and water for their animals. Survival was a hard job in the dry desert. They had to know exactly where water was hidden. To stay safe, they dug secret holes called cisterns. They marked these water holes with signs only they knew.

This skill helped them live in places without much rain.

History shows the Nabataeans rose to power over time. They likely started as a group of traveling tribes. Some people think they came from Yemen in the southwest. Others think they came from the eastern coast or Mesopotamia. By the 4th century BC, they began to appear in records. They grew strong by taking over the frankincense trade. This trade moved goods from Lihyan all the way to Gaza.

They eventually moved from being nomads to having kings.

Many wars tested the strength of the Nabataean people. In 312 BC, a Greek leader named Antigonus I attacked them. He sent an officer named Athenaeus with 4,000 soldiers. The Nabataeans fought back with 8,000 soldiers and won. Later, Antigonus' son Demetrius also tried to attack them. The Nabataeans used smoke signals to warn their people. They moved their silver and spices to safe mountain spots.

The kingdom changed from a group of tribes into a real state. In the mid-3rd century BC, they began to have kings. One possible king might have been named Rabbel. They built amazing cities like Petra in the red rocks. They also traded very valuable things like myrrh and spices. Their independent rule lasted until the year AD 106. At that time, the Roman Empire took over their land.
