Before Mori, math experts grouped flat shapes called surfaces. Mori found a way to group three-dimensional shapes. These are called three-folds. He used a tool called minimal models. These models help group shapes by their simplest forms. He found that these models work for three-folds. He had to allow some singularities. A singularity is a point that is not smooth. This work helped start the minimal model program. This is a big area of math research today.

Mori won many big prizes. He won the Fields Medal in 1990. This is a top prize for math. In 2021, he won the Order of Culture. He was also the first leader from East Asia for a big math group. This group is the International Mathematical Union. He earned his Ph.D. at Kyoto University in 1978. He has taught at many schools. He is a professor at Kyoto University now.
