He is an expert in algebraic geometry. This field uses math to study the properties of shapes. Mori is best known for his work with three-folds. A three-fold is a shape that exists in three dimensions. His work helps us understand how these complex shapes are organized.

In math, experts like to group similar shapes together. This is called classification. For a long time, people used minimal models to group flat surfaces. Mori wanted to do this for three-dimensional shapes too. He found that minimal models could work for three-folds. However, he had to allow for some singularities. A singularity is a part of a shape that is not smooth. This discovery helped start the minimal model program. This program is still a very active area of research today.

Mori began his journey at Kyoto University. He earned his Ph.D. there in 1978. His thesis was about endomorphism rings of abelian varieties. He studied under a teacher named Masayoshi Nagata. Since 1990, he has been a professor at Kyoto University. He has also spent time teaching at many other famous schools.

He has traveled to many places to teach and study. Mori was a visiting professor at Harvard University from 1977 to 1980. He also visited the Institute for Advanced Study from 1981 to 1982. He taught at Columbia University from 1985 to 1987. Later, he spent time at the University of Utah. He was also a visiting scholar there in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These experiences helped him share his ideas with the world.

Mori has received many important honors for his work. In 1990, he won the Fields Medal. This is a very prestigious prize for mathematicians. He also became the first leader from East Asia for the International Mathematical Union. He served as the president of this large group. In 2021, he was given the Order of Culture.
